CHAPTER FIFTEEN
HUNT
THE SEERâS MINIONS had rarely seen him so angry. He paced the warehouse with the Heart on his trail. She babbled and spat prophesies of blood and dead gods.
âI have seen this, it was shown to me,â he raged. âThe others, like maggots, will devour us all unless we skin them alive.â
The Heart fell silent and nodded. Her eyes went to the corpse hanging from the ceiling. It was the brother of the troublemaker, the woman whoâd escaped with the dark-skinned girl. The Heartâs hands were bloody from stealing Joseâs heart. It was the only way to stop the power in him. When he cursed the Risen with the name of his death god, La Huesuda, she felt a wind so cold it took her breath away. He died after their clubs broke every bone in his body, but the Heart still felt his spirit stalking them. So sheâd suggested removing his skin and heart. The Seer agreed, and his orders were fulfilled.
âWe must find them,â he said, his voice drawing the Heartâs attention back to him.
âAnd bleed them dry, make them rain like the sky,â she agreed.
The Seer stood before the tank to ask the beast for its knowledge. Its eyes glowed a yellow gold, and he felt his resolve growing. He could feel a second pulse within him. The Old Ones wouldnât let the girl escape so easily, but the Risen had to do their part as well. He placed his hand on the tank and felt its power, calling out to its brethren to kill the women who had escaped.
âGather the hunters and send them out for her again. I should not have underestimated them before. I should have sent more men, but who would have thought a woman and a girl could be so vicious . . . â
The men came forward, slapping their chests and howling, ready to avenge their brothers.
âBring the leftovers. I want to question them,â the Seer ordered.
An old man and a blonde woman were thrown at his feet. The blonde held a pink teddy bear and kept her eyes on the floor. The old man gazed up at the Seer, his face an angry snarl.
âWhere did they go?â the Seer asked.
âWe donât know,â the blonde answered in fearful obedience. âThey didnât say anything about where they were going.â
He looked to the old man. âI was asking you too.â
âThey didnât say anything about their plans . . . but I hope they come back and tear your head off,â the old man answered. His hands came together, and he fingered his wedding ring again. It gave him the strength to defy the Seer, to initiate his death sentence.
âYou have gotten brave,â the Seer sneered.
âThe woman made me remember my wife. She was strong like that girl, but you killed her!â
âOh, your wife,â the Seer scoffed. âShe tasted fine but was far too bony.â
The old man rose faster than the Seer expected and landed a swift punch to the cult leaderâs nose. He was dragged away and beaten until blood ran from his nose and eyes.
